During the opening ceremony of the Independence Monument “Žemaitis” on 4th June 1934, the President Antanas Smetona visited Raseiniai. On the occasion the President planted the oak that still grows in the square. The same year, to celebrate the 60th birthday of the President, the permanent Žemaitis Square was named after Antanas Smetona and had the title until the occupation.
