On the initiative of the Ariogala Reclamation Board in 1977 the sculpture “Meliorator” was erected by the old Samogitian Road. The author was Bernardas Bučas, the husband of the famous Lithuanian poet Salomėja Nėris. That is a 4 meter-high, coloured concrete sculpture. The total cost of the work was 12 thousand Rubles. However, not all the sum was paid to the author as it was noticed by the soviet authorities as reminding a Christian cross. The “Meliorator” was taken down. The fact was very painful to B. Bučas, who soon suffered the first stroke. See the sculpture at Vytautas street today.
