The birthplace of Simonas Stanevičius, a Lithuanian cultural figure, writer and fable classic in the first half of the 19th century, is located in Kanopėnai village, Viduklė eldership. The homestead is easily accessible from the Samogitian Road and the motorway.
The alley of old maples will take you to the homestead of a Samogitian nobleman dating back to the fourth century. The huts of the homestead are located around two yards: the clean and the farm one. In the clean yard – a residential house, in front of it stands a barn-museum. In the farm yard – the wheelhouse has been restored, other buildings of the homestead have been restored as well. The homestead is protected from the west winds by a garden and a row of trees dating to several centuries. The spacious courtyard still has the aura of the 19th century.
Samogitian culture is cherished in Kanopėnai. In the homestead of Simonas Tadas Stanevičius (1799–1848), objects reminiscent of the life and work of the writer and the ethnographic legacy of the region are exhibited. Various literary events, May songs, folklore festivals are organized.
