The buildings are marked in the city plans of 19th century, people used to live and trade in the territory. Raseiniai County Board and the first cinema settled here in 20th century. At he very beginning of the 2nd World War these buildings were burnt. During the Soviet period the square used to be named as Victory square. The name of the Independence Defenders was given in 1995. The reconstruction took place in 2018. The memorial signs to the signatories of the Lithuanian Partisans Declaration of February 16th Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas and Petras Bartkus-Žadgaila was erected in 2019.
